UNITY ART SHOW FEATURED ARTIST: Kyler Garron

Here is the fourth artist interview for The BLACKout Magazine's feature on the artists of the Unity art show:

Name: Kyler Garron
Year: Junior
Major: Human Development and Family Studies

Where do you get your inspiration from?
“A lot of the inspiration for my work comes from just my pride in who I am so that has to do with my race and ethnicity. Also, what’s going on in the world and the people who influence me, so my mom, my brothers, things like that.”

How long have you been painting?
“I’ve been painting for the last, maybe, four years. I started pretty late, but I’ve been drawing ever since I could pick up a pencil. I think I’ve been drawing for so long, and my mom is really good at art and I have relatives who are professional artists now, so my mom was like give it a try, try something new.”

How do you feel about being in the show?
“I’m really excited actually, I feel like the concept of the Unity Art Show is really cool, and honestly I’m excited to show my work no matter what, not only just because it’s my work, but I kind of like the idea that people see how I think and how I perceive things.”

What will you be featuring in the show?
“I started using black canvases, actually, which is pretty cool. So, I have a couple of pieces that are black canvases and I’m really excited about them just because it makes all the colors pop more and it feeds into race and ethnicity; and also, what’s going on in the world.”

What are your plans for the future?
“Art’s always going to be something that I’m doing no matter what, whether it’s for me or for other people. I feel like it’s always going to be a side position for me, because I feel like making art my major, making it into work would be a mistake for me because I enjoy it so much, I get to do it on my own time. So, it’s going to be a side thing for me, but I’m never going to stop doing it.”

Any last words?

“I think the show is going to be really successful, there’s a lot of great artists and you see a lot of different ideas and ways of thinking, so, I definitely suggest going.”
